Great Gable, via Grey Knotts, Brandreth and Green Gable. | |||||
Date | 15/5/2005 | GREAT GABLE - is a favourite of all fellwalkers and first favourite with many GREY KNOTTS - the view is good on all sides, with a skyline of giants to the south BRANDRETH - a stroll down by the west fence might well produce the most magnificent picture of the year. Contrast and composition are excellent GREEN GABLE - is not at all insignificant. At 2603ft, its altitude by Lakeland standards, is considerable. A sharp peaked summit, more delicately wrought than Great Gable's adds distinction. |

Leaving Honister Hause we made the immediate steep ascent of Grey Knotts. The walk from there to Brandreth was easy with good views opening out on all sides. Likewise the walk from Brandreth to Green Gable was easy and passed without incident. From thereon in, the walk became much tougher with the steep descent to Windy Gap followed by the steep climb up to Great Gable's summit. We were fortunate enough to have some reasonable visibility and the views from Westmorland cairn in particular, were superb. The descent down the western flank was hard going. Once the descent to Beckhead had been made it was a leisurely stroll back to Honister Hause. We made our way to the Langstrath at Stonethwaite and had a very good meal and the non drivers had a few well earned gills |
